BETHLEHEM (Ma'an) -- Israeli forces and Palestinians clashed for the second consecutive day at the Al-Aqsa Mosque compound on Monday, a day after Israeli police surrounded worshipers inside the mosque itself and fired stun grenades and tear gas inside.

Tensions have been rising in recent weeks amid visits to the site by Israelis under armed guard and restrictions on Palestinian school children and women entering the holy site.

Israeli Defense Minister Moshe Yaalon last week outlawed two Palestinian groups that confront Jewish visitors to the compound, further fueling tensions.

The third holiest site in Islam, the Al-Aqsa Mosque compound is also venerated as Judaism's most holy place as it sits where Jews believe the First and Second Temples once stood.

Following Israel's occupation of East Jerusalem in 1967, Israel has maintained an agreement with the Islamic trust that controls the Al-Aqsa compound not to allow non-Muslim prayer in the area.
