Palestinian woman from Jaffa killed in attack in Salfit, motives unclear

SALFIT (Ma'an) -- A Palestinian citizen of Israel was killed and her husband was injured overnight on Saturday after the couple’s vehicle was attacked on the main road near the village of Biddya in the northern occupied West Bank district of Salfit, Palestinian security sources told Ma'an.

The sources said the couple was attacked during a family visit in Biddya, and that the motives behind the attack remained unclear.

The slain woman was identified in a statement released by Israeli police spokeswoman Luba al-Samri as 43-year-old Huwayda Shawwa, from the city of Jaffa in Israel.

According to al-Samri, Israeli police were alerted at 2:20 a.m. to an attack on a vehicle on route 505 near the illegal Israeli settlement of Barqan east of Biddya.

Israeli police officers rushed to the scene and found the couple in their car, with the man suffering from minor wounds and the woman suffering from critical injuries. Shortly after, she was pronounced dead on the scene.

The statement highlighted that initial reports suggested that the motive behind the attack was criminal.
