Israeli authorities transfer Palestinian prisoner to solitary confinement

Dec. 22, 2016 4:13 P.M. (Updated: Dec. 22, 2016 4:13 P.M.)
RAMALLAH (Ma’an) -- Imprisoned Hamas leader Abdullah al-Barghouthi was transferred into a solitary conferment cell in Israel's Rimon prison for "unknown reasons," the Palestinian Prisoner's Society (PPS) said Wednesday.

He has been placed in solitary confinement before, most recently in May 2015, after it was revealed that he had given a telephone interview to a Gaza-based radio station from inside the prison. He declared a hunger strike shortly after the transfer.

Barghouthi is serving 67 life terms, the highest sentence ever handed down by an Israeli military court, after he was convicted of multiple attacks in Israel.

He has been detained since March 2003.
