Palestinian police officer injured after being run over by car

Feb. 17, 2017 10:21 P.M. (Updated: Feb. 19, 2017 4:57 P.M.)
JENIN (Ma’an) -- A Palestinian police officer was critically injured on Friday after being run over by an “illegal car” in the south of the occupied West Bank district of Jenin.

Palestinian police spokesperson Luay Irzeiqat said that the Palestinian police had installed a checkpoint near the southern entrance of Jenin after the driver of an “illegal car” passing through the checkpoint had refused to follow police orders and stop. The driver then proceeded to run over police officer Mahmoud Aiasa, 42, and escaped before the police could reprimand him.

Irzeiqat said that Aiasa was taken to the al-Razi hospital in Jenin and his injuries were described as critical by doctors.

Irzeiqat added that the car that had caused the injuries was later found rolled over in in apparent “self-inflicted’ accident in the southeast of Jenin.

Following an investigation, the police had discovered that the driver was from the village of Qabatiya and was subsequently detained.
