Israeli forces detain 18 Palestinians in predawn raids

BETHLEHEM (Ma'an) -- Israeli forces carried out several predawn raids across the occupied territory on Tuesday, detaining at least 18 Palestinians, including at least three minors.

Israeli forces carry out detention raids across the occupied Palestinian territory on a near-nightly basis, with the UN recording an average of 95 weekly raids in the West Bank in 2016, and 73 weekly raids on average thus far in 2017.

According to prisoners’ rights group Addameer, 6,500 Palestinians were held in Israeli prisons as of January, 53 of whom were women and 300 of them minors.

Southern West Bank

Local sources in the Bethlehem district said that 24-year-old Habib Muhammad al-Sheikh and 20-year-old Ayman Muhammad al-Sheikh were detained from the village of Marah Rabah, while Nour Abdullah Mahmoud al-Jawarish, 26, was detained from Beit Jala.

An Israeli army spokesperson and a statement from the Palestinian Prisoner's Society (PPS) confirmed the detentions, and PPS said that Israeli forces detained Muhammad Salim al-Badan, 22, in the Bethlehem area as well.

The PPS statement also said that Sultan Nadir Masalma and 15-year-old Yazan Daana were detained in Hebron district. An Israeli army spokesperson confirmed one detention in the Hebron district, saying it was made in the town of Beit Awwa.

Central West Bank and East Jerusalem

Israeli forces also raided the village of Bilin in the central occupied West Bank district of Ramallah and detained 17-year-old Abd al-Khaliq Burnat, according to the PPS statement.

PPS said that Israeli forces detained 19-year-old Abdullah Mashhour Said and 18-year-old Ahmad Afif Askar from the village of Hizma in the central occupied West Bank district of Jerusalem.

An Israeli army spokesperson confirmed the detentions in Bilin and Hizma.

Meanwhile, in occupied East Jerusalem, Israeli forces detained 14-year-old Muhammad Nadir Abu Farha from his home in the Old City, PPS reported.

Northern West Bank

During raids in to the northern occupied West Bank district of Jenin, PPS said that 19-year-old Khalid Muhammad Sabaanah and his 28-year-old brother Amin were detained.

According to an Israeli army spokesperson, three total detentions were made in the Jenin area, which were carried out in the town of Qabatiya during a raid to uncover unlicensed weapons.

Meanwhile, Asim Mustafa al-Shunnar was detained in the Nablus district, according to PPS. The Israeli army spokesperson said that five detentions were made in Nablus: three in Osarin, one in Jet, and one in the al-Majin neighborhood of Nablus city.
