10 Palestinians injured as man loses control of his weapon at Tulkarem solidarity march

May 19, 2017 3:34 P.M. (Updated: May 19, 2017 5:12 P.M.)
TULKAREM (Ma’an) -- Ten Palestinians, including several children, were injured Thursday evening after a Palestinian man lost control of his locally-made weapon during a march in the northern occupied West Bank city of Tulkarem, that was launched in solidarity with hunger-striking Palestinian prisoners.

Palestinian security sources told Ma’an that a masked man, who was participating in the march along with five other armed men, lost control over his weapon, causing the injury of 10 people, two of whom were said to be in serious condition.

Sources said that the masked armed man had set his weapon on “full auto,” causing it to start automatically firing bullets into the air, at which point the man was unable to control the gun.

Medical sources at the Tulkarem Governmental Hospital told Ma’an that all injured suffered from wounds in their lower extremities, highlighting that an unspecified number of those injured were minors.

The two Palestinians with serious injuries may need to be transferred to other hospitals inside the occupied Palestinian territory or to Israel in order to get proper medical care, sources added.

Palestinians across the West Bank have launched several marches and protests in solidarity with some 1,300 hunger-striking prisoners, who entered their 33rd day of strike on Friday.

Tens of Palestinians were injured during clashes with Israeli forces in several districts of the West Bank Thursday, with many injured by live ammunition.

A 23-year-old Palestinian was shot in the head and killed by an Israeli settler on Thursday during clashes that erupted in the Nablus-area village of Huwwara following a solidarity march in the area.
