Israeli forces open fire at driver who refuses to stop at Hebron-area checkpoint

HEBRON (Ma'an) -- Israeli soldiers opened fire at a vehicle south of Hebron in the southern occupied West Bank on Saturday, eyewitnesses told Ma'an.

Israeli soldiers stationed at a checkpoint near an industrial zone in southern Hebron had signaled for the driver to stop, and when he didn't, Israeli forces opened fire and the driver sped away.

The vehicle reportedly stopped later and the driver fled the scene on foot, before backup Israeli forces deployed heavily in the area and launched a search to apprehend the driver.

It was not clear why the driver did not stop at the checkpoint, or whether the vehicle was registered with Palestinian or Israeli license plates. However, Palestinians who drive undocumented vehicles with Israeli registration plates occasionally attempt to refuse being stopped by Israeli forces to avoid penalties.

An Israeli army spokesperson said they were looking into reports.
