Israeli forces detain 22 Palestinians, seize weapons in overnight raids

BETHLEHEM (Ma’an) -- Israeli forces detained at least 22 Palestinians during overnight raids between Tuesday night and Wednesday morning across the occupied West Bank, according to Israeli army and police sources.

In the northern occupied West Bank district of Jenin, Israeli forces detained four Palestinians. According to an Israeli army spokesperson, forces detained one Palestinian from the village of Qabatiya, and two from the village of Raba.

Separately, Israeli police spokesperson Luba al-Samri said in a statement that as part of an Israeli campaign “to fight illegal weapons,” a joint force of Israeli police, border police, and soldiers on Tuesday night raided the Jenin-area town of Jaba and ransacked several homes.

According to al-Samri, forces seized a rifle and an amount of ammunition inside a house during the raid. In addition, a Palestinian suspect was detained for questioning.

In the Nablus-area Askar refugee camp Israeli forces detained one Palestinian, while four Palestinians were detained from the Tulkarem-area village of Attil, according to an army spokesperson.

In the central West Bank districts of Ramallah and Jerusalem, Israeli forces detained a total of seven Palestinians.

According to the Israeli army, in the Ramallah district, two Palestinians were detained from Qalandiya village, while one Palestinian was detained from the village of Ras Karkar.

In the Jerusalem district, Israeli forces detained one Palestinian from the town of Biddu, one from Qattana, one from Beit Anan, and one from Bir Nabala.

In the southern West Bank, Israeli forces detained one Palestinian from the Bethlehem-area village of Tuqu. In the Hebron district, forces detained two Palestinians from Surif, one Palestinian from Rabud, one from Khirbet al-Tabban, and one from al-Baqqar.

Israeli raids in Palestinian towns, villages, and refugee camps are a daily occurrence in the West Bank and East Jerusalem, with a weekly average of 95 search and detention raids carried out over the course 2016, according to UN documentation. According to prisoners’ rights group Addameer, there were 6,300 Palestinians in Israeli prisons as of June.
