Palestinian reportedly dies of natural causes in PA cell

Aug. 8, 2017 9:18 P.M. (Updated: Aug. 8, 2017 9:18 P.M.)
BETHLEHEM (Ma'an) -- A Palestinian was found dead in a Palestinian Authority (PA) detention center in the southern occupied West Bank district of Bethlehem on Tuesday, Palestinian police said.

Palestinian Police spokesman Luay Irzeiqat told Ma'an that a 43-year-old man from the Bethlehem area was found dead in his cell on Tuesday morning.

The spokesman said that man died of natural causes, adding that his body would be autopsied to determine the exact cause of death.

The PA has been accused of mistreating detainees in its custody, including through the use of torture, and verbal and physical abuse. The deadly police beating of Ahmad Halaweh in August 2016 sparked outrage over Palestinian police’s abuse of force, amid broader criticism of the PA’s controversial security coordination policy with Israel.
