Palestinian prisoner released after serving 11 years in prison

Aug. 13, 2017 10:45 P.M. (Updated: Aug. 14, 2017 1:17 P.M.)
BETHLEHEM (Ma'an) -- Israeli authorities on Sunday released Palestinian prisoner Iyas Rifai, 34, a resident of the Kafr Ein village in the central Occupied West Bank Ramallah district, after he serving 11 years in Israeli prison.

The Palestinian Committee of Prisoners’ Affairs said in a statement that Rifai, who the committee said was ill, was taken immediately to the Palestine Medical Complex in Ramallah City, where he was welcomed by his family along with the head of the committee Issa Qaraqe, and head of the Palestinian Prisoner's Society (PPS) Fares Qaddura.

Rifai was detained by Israeli forces in 2006 and was first sentenced to eight years in prison, but after an appeal from the Israeli military prosecution, an Israeli appeals court increased his sentence to 11 years.

He was released Monday from the Ktziot prison in the Negev desert.

According to prisoners rights group Addameer, there are currently 6,128 Palestinian prisoners in Israeli prison.
