Israeli forces detain 4 Palestinians during raids in West Bank, East Jerusalem

JERUSALEM (Ma'an) -- Israeli forces detained at least four Palestinians during overnight raids between Thursday and Friday in the occupied West Bank and East Jerusalem, according to Israeli and Palestinian sources.

In the central West Bank, an Israeli army spokesperson told Ma’an that one unidentified Palestinian was detained in Ramallah city.

In occupied East Jerusalem, Mansour al-Abbasi, 17, was detained by Israeli forces in the neighborhood of Silwan. Locals said that Israeli forces had searched his home and “assaulted” his mother and younger brother.

Israeli forces also cut off the electricity to the area in Silwan where al-Abbasi lives, locals said. Palestinians in East Jerusalem have reported in the past that Israeli authorities often cut the electricity feeding Palestinian neighborhoods where overnight detention raids are scheduled to take place.

In the southern West Bank, Majid Moussa Jaber, 33, was detained from Bethlehem city, after Israeli forces raided and searched Jaber’s home on al-Atan street, locals said. An Israeli army spokesperson confirmed the detention in Bethlehem city.

The spokesperson added that another unidentified Palestinian was detained in Surif village in the Hebron district.

Israeli raids in Palestinian towns, villages, and refugee camps are a daily occurrence in the West Bank and East Jerusalem, with a biweekly average of 85 search and detention raids carried thus far in 2017, according to UN documentation.

According to prisoners’ rights group Addameer, 6,128 Palestinians were detained by Israel as of July. The group has estimated that some 40 percent of Palestinian men will be detained by Israel at some point in their lives.
