Palestinian detained at light rail stop for possession of a dagger

BETHLEHEM (Ma'an) -- Israeli police conducted a search on a Palestinian man at a light rail stop in Jerusalem on Wednesday and detained him after they found what appeared to be a traditional ceremonial dagger in his possession.

Israeli police spokesperson Micky Rosenfeld said in a statement that police "apprehended a suspect" at the light rail near Highway 1 in Jerusalem. "The suspect was searched and had a knife on him. He is being questioned by officers on the scene," the statement said, and provided a picture of the dagger.

Israeli police spokeswoman Luba al-Samri referred to the man as a "Jerusalemite," indicating the detainee was a Palestinian resident of occupied East Jerusalem.
