Israeli forces detain Palestinians, spark clashes in overnight West Bank raids

BETHLEHEM (Ma’an) -- Israeli forces detained at least eight Palestinians overnight between Thursday and Friday, including one man who was attempting to travel to Jordan in order to receive medical treatment, according to official Palestinian Authority (PA)-owned Wafa news agency.

According to Wafa, an unidentified Palestinian man wa detained by Israeli forces at the Allenby Bridge crossing between Jordan and the occupied West Bank overnight, on his way to receive medical treatment in Jordan.

Meanwhile, Israeli forces detained seven other Palestinians during overnight raids in the West Bank.

In the northern West Bank, Wafa reported that Israeli forces “carried out raid and search operations in search for wanted Palestinians accused of allegedly throwing rocks at Israeli military checkpoints near Tura and Umm ar-Rehan villages, in Jenin.”

In the Qalqiliya district, Israeli forces detained five Palestinians from the village of Jayyus, Wafa reported.

In the southern district of Hebron, Israeli forces raided the al-Arrub refugee camp as well as the Hebron city area, before detaining a Palestinian from his home on the al-Salam street in Hebron city. The man’s identity remained unknown.

In the city of Bethlehem, Israeli forces detained a 25-year-old man after raiding and searching his home in the al-Duheisha refugee camp.

Meanwhile, clashes erupted at the northern entrance of Bethlehem city between Israeli forces and local youth. No injuries were reported.

An Israeli army spokesperson told Ma’an that no detentions were carried out, and said they would look into reports of the clashes.

Israeli raids in Palestinian towns, villages, and refugee camps are a daily occurrence in the West Bank and East Jerusalem, with a biweekly average of 85 search and detention raids carried out thus far in 2017, according to UN documentation.

Israeli forces detained 522 Palestinians, including 130 minors and 16 women, over the course of the month of August, according to a joint report released Palestinian institutions on Sunday.

The total number of Palestinians in Israeli prisons reached 6,300 prisoners, the report said, 64 of them women. Among them are 10 girls under the age of 18 and 300 underage boys, 450 administrative detainees imprisoned without charge or trial, and 12 members of the Palestinian Legislative Council, the Palestinian parliament.
