BETHLEHEM (Ma’an) -- Secretary General of the Palestine Liberation Organization (PLO) Executive Committee Saeb Erekat underwent a successful lung transplant on Friday, according to official Palestinian Authority (PA) Wafa news agency.

According to Wafa, Erekat, 62, was admitted on Thursday to the Inova Fairfax Hospital in Virginia in the US. The official has been suffering from a “debilitating lung disease,” and has been on the lung transplant waiting list for few months, Wafa added.

Wafa quoted Head of the PLO’s General Delegation in the US Husam Zomlot as saying that Erekat’s new lung is “working and responding well,” and that Erekat will need to receive follow-up treatments for several weeks.
