Palestinian Ministry of Health to send $3 million in aid to Gaza

May 8, 2018 11:32 A.M. (Updated: May 9, 2018 3:27 P.M.)
BETHLEHEM -- (Ma'an) The Ramallah-based Palestinian Ministry of Health announced on Monday that it would be sending $3 million worth of medical aid to the Gaza Strip.

The move was confirmed by Health Minister Jawad Awwad, who said that a total of 20 trucks worth of medical supplies -- valued at $3 million -- will be dispatched from warehouses in the northern occupied West Bank city of Nablus, to the besieged Gaza Strip in the next few days.

The multi-million-dollar aid announcement is said to have been ordered by President Mahmoud Abbas and Prime Minister Rami Hamdallah.

Hospitals in the Gaza Strip have faced severe restrictions on access to medical aid, as well as other vital supplies due to the deca de-long Israeli blockade of the strip.

The aid announcement comes at an important time for hospitals in Gaza, who in recent weeks have admitted thousands for treatment following the “Great March of Return” demonstrations on the southern border with Israel that have killed more than 50 Palestinians and injured countless more.

According to the Ministry of Health in Gaza, as of May 5th, the Israeli army has injured more than 7,900 protestors since the demonstrations began on March 30, including 100 medics. Twenty-five ambulances have also been damaged by Israeli fire.

While the ministry reported that the death toll on May 5th stood at 45 killed, Ma’an figures show that the death toll now stands at 53, after the most recent killing of two Palestinians the southern Gaza Strip.
