GAZA CITY (Ma'an) -- A Palestinian youth succumbed on Thursday noon to wounds he sustained earlier Thursday when the Israeli artillery shelled eastern Rafah City in the southern Gaza Strip at dawn.

The Gaza Ministry of Health confirmed that Mustafa Abu Azzum succumbed to his wounds, pointing out that he had sustained a critical wound in the head.

Witnesses said that the Israeli artillery targeted a group of Palestinians near the “return camp” of eastern Rafah on Thursday dawn critically injuring two of them.

According to the Ministry, Abu Azzum's death brings the total number of Palestinians killed during protests since March 30th to 132.

Palestinian ambulances had transferred those injured to the European Hospital for treatment.

On Wednesday evening, Israeli forces reportedly opened fire at a group of Palestinians in eastern Rafah injuring three of them with live bullets.

A Ma’an reporter said that a group of Palestinian youths had arrived at the “return camp” of eastern Rafah as part of the daily protests at the site when Israeli forces opened fire at them.

The Israeli army reported that they opened fire at a group of Palestinians who attempted to cross into Israel through the border fence.

Israel has come under widespread international condemnation for its use of excessive force and live ammunition against unarmed protesters.

Israeli army incursions inside the Palestinian territory have long been a near daily occurrence, as the Israeli army also regularly opens fire on Palestinian fishermen and farmers along the border areas, despite a ceasefire agreement that ended the 2014 war.
