Erekat: 'The current situation is not sustainable'

July 5, 2018 4:58 P.M. (Updated: July 20, 2018 9:57 A.M.)
RAMALLAH (Ma'an) -- Palestine Liberation Organization (PLO) official Saeb Erekat said on Wednesday that Israel and the United States are leading efforts to destroy the proposed two-state solution through a series of measures aimed at weakening the PA.

While speaking to reporters during a press conference in al-Bireh City, Erekat said “we are studying the Palestinian National Council’s (PNC) call for defining Israeli Palestinian relations in security, economically and politically,” explaining that the PA is prepared to give the responsibility of the occupied territories to Israel.

The controversial decision by Israeli's Knesset to deduct funds to the PA, which is used to pay stipends for killed, wounded and imprisoned Palestinians, and their families, may lead to its economic collapse in the near future.

Erekat pointed out that Israel’s aim to “destroy” the PA means it is time for Israeli Prime Minister Netanyahu to take responsibility as an “occupying power” of the people in the West Bank, East Jerusalem, and the Gaza Strip.

“The current situation is not sustainable and will not be sustainable,” said Erekat.

Erekat also mentioned that the United States has recognized Jerusalem as the capital of Israel, and moved its embassy from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem, as well as limiting aid to UNRWA which supports Palestinian refugees that make up 80% of Gaza’s population, and freezing funds to the PA.

The PA is prepared to go to the International Criminal Court (ICC) and the International Court of Justice (ICJ) to hold the US accountable for its actions towards Jerusalem and the Palestinian people, which are under violations of international law.
