School year exceptionally begins at Khan al-Ahmar school

July 16, 2018 12:07 P.M. (Updated: July 20, 2018 9:56 A.M.)
RAMALLAH (Ma'an) -- Despite Israeli attempts to demolish the only school of the Khan al-Ahmar village, east of Jerusalem, the Palestinian Ministry of Education exceptionally opened the school year at the village’s school on Monday.

More than 170 students attended, alongside their families, as Minister of Education Sabri Saydam declared the beginning of the school year at the Khan al-Ahmar school; several ministers and officials also attended the ceremony.

Head of the National Committee to Resist the Wall and Settlements Walid Assaf said that opening the school year at Khan al-Ahmar is crucial and strategic as it carries a message to the Israeli authorities that demolishing the village and displacing residents is not acceptable.

Arab Knesset Member Ahmad Tibi said that this step is exceptional as it “strengthens the steadfastness” of residents against the ongoing ethnic cleansing in the area.

Meanwhile, the Israeli police issued tickets and fines against journalists and Palestinians attempting to reach Khan al-Ahmar on Monday.

The Israeli police set up a flying checkpoint on the road leading to Khan al-Ahmar.

Israeli forces had set up iron gates at the entrances of Khan al-Ahmar on Sunday blocking all access ways to the village.
