Egypt confirms efforts to achieve Palestinian unity

CAIRO (Ma'an) -- The Egyptian Presidency stressed that the country is keen to achieve Palestinian reconciliation and national unity.

Egypt's Abdel Fattah al-Sisi's statement was made during a phone call with Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas, on Thursday.

According to spokesperson of the Egyptian Presidency, Bassam Radi, al-Sisi said that the Palestinian Authority must take over its responsibilities in the besieged Gaza Strip, pointing out that it would help revive the Palestinian-Israeli negotiations.

The Palestinian President expressed thanks for Egypt; leadership and people, for its role in supporting the Palestinian people's rights and for its efforts to achieve Palestinian reconciliation which would contribute to restoring their legitimate rights of establishing an idenependent Palestinian state, with East Jerusalem as its capital.

The two parties agreed on continuing coordination and consultation regarding mutual-interest issues.
