UN extends mandate of UNIFIL in Lebanon

BETHLEHEM (Ma'an) -- The United Nations (UN) Security Council, approved the extension of the mandate of United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL), on Thursday, until August 31, 2019, calling on that Government to develop a plan to increase its naval capabilities, with the goal of decreasing the Mission's Maritime Task Force and transitioning activities to the country's armed forces.

According to the UN, the Council reaffirmed the need for effective deployment of the Lebanese Armed Forces in southern Lebanon and in territorial waters at an accelerated pace, recalling its request for precise timelines to be jointly and promptly elaborated by the Forces and the Secretary-General for those deployments

UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres had previously said in a report, presented to the council, that "Israel must withdraw its forces from Lebanese territory and cease violations of Lebanese airspace." "Israel must retreat its forces from Lebanese territories and stop violations of Lebanese airspace" and that "the Government of Lebanon must exercise effective authority over all Lebanese territory."
