Erekat: 'Israel escalated its aggression against Palestinians'

Oct. 21, 2018 2:27 P.M. (Updated: Oct. 22, 2018 11:56 A.M.)
RAMALLAH (Ma'an) -- Secretary General of the Palestine Liberation Organization's (PLO) Executive Committee, Saeb Erekat, said on Sunday, that by detaining the Governor of Jerusalem, Adnan Ghaith, Israel had further violated its own commitments and obligations regarding Palestinian institutions in Jerusalem City.

On Saturday, several vehicles, belonging to the special unit of Israeli forces, intercepted another vehicle that was transporting the Palestinian Governor of Jerusalem, Adnan Ghaith, in the Beit Hanina neighborhood.

Israeli forces forcefully detained Ghaith and transferred him to the Ofer detention center.

A reason was not given for the detention.
In addition, Israeli forces detained Jihad Faqeeh, 50, head of the Jerusalem office in the Palestinian Intelligence force, and was taken to an unknown location.

Erekat said in a press release, “This is a new step taken by the Israeli Occupation against the Palestinian presence in Jerusalem,” adding “Israel is further violating its own commitments and obligations regarding Palestinian institutions in the city.”

He continued, “The threats and detentions against Palestinian political and community leaders, including the abduction of Governor Ghaith, should only be taken as part of Israel’s plan to eliminate any foundations for a political solution based on two-states on the 1967 border.”

Erekat stressed that “After the Trump Administration's illegal recognition of Jerusalem as Israel's capital, the Israeli Government has escalated its aggression against the Palestinian people, including in and around Occupied East Jerusalem.”

“This includes forcible transfer of civilian population, home demolitions, colonial-settlement expansion and persecution of Palestinian civil society and political leaders.”

Erekat demanded for the immediate release of Ghaith, “We call upon the international community to take a firm stand on the case of Governor Ghaith, as well as on the issue of the Palestinian institutions.”

“We consider the abduction of Governor Ghaith not only to be a further Israeli violation and aggression against the Palestinian people but a reminder to the international community of the need to take concrete measures to save East Jerusalem, the capital of the State of Palestine.”
