Egypt closes Rafah crossing in both directions

Jan. 24, 2019 12:23 P.M. (Updated: Jan. 26, 2019 10:11 A.M.)
GAZA CITY (Ma’an) -- The Egyptian authorities confirmed that the Rafah border crossing in the southern besieged Gaza Strip was closed, on Thursday, in both directions.

Egyptian authorities informed the Rafah border crossing administration of closure in both directions due to anniversary celebrations of the 2011 Egyptian revolution.

The border crossing is scheduled to resume operations on January 27th, allowing passage in one direction only.

It is noteworthy that the border crossing was opened in one direction since January 7th after the Palestinian Authority (PA) pulled out its staff working at the Palestinian side of the border over disputes with the Hamas movement, which is the de facto leading political party in Gaza.

The Egyptian authorities pointed out that the Rafah crossing would not allow passage in both directions until a legitimate representative of the PA will be present to manage the crossing from the Palestinian side.

There are three crossings into the Gaza Strip and one of them is the Gaza-Egypt crossing known as the Rafah crossing in southern Gaza, which is specifically used for pedestrians.
