Israeli settlers attack Palestinian school in Urif

Feb. 21, 2019 5:12 P.M. (Updated: Feb. 24, 2019 9:56 A.M.)
NABLUS (Ma'an) -- Israeli settlers threw rocks at a Palestinian high school in the Urif village, in the northern occupied West Bank district of Nablus, on Thursday afternoon.

Ghassan Daghlas, an official who monitors settlement activity in the northern West Bank, told Ma'an that 50 Israeli settlers from the nearby illegal Israeli settlement of Yitzhar raided the eastern area of Urif.

Daghlas added that Israeli settlers attacked the school and several homes with rocks; the school was then evacuated.

One house was identified among the attacked homes as belonging to Samir Shihadeh; the windows of the house were smashed.

Daghlas pointed out that a 17-year-old identified as Humam Abed al-Hafiz Shihada sustained bruises and fractures in his leg.

Israeli forces reportedly fired tear-gas bombs and rubber-coated steel bullets targeting students leaving their school.

The Urif high school has been repeatedly attacked by Israeli settlers in the past few months.

The Palestinian Ministry of Education released its annual report for 2017 documenting the Israeli government's violations against Palestinian education, saying that 80,279 Palestinian children and 4,929 teachers and staff were "attacked" by Israeli settlers or soldiers.

According to the report, nine students were killed, while 603 students and 55 teachers and school employees sustained live or rubber bullets wounds during Israeli raids into schools or by being run over by Israeli military jeeps, while dozens of students suffered from suffocation due to inhaling tear-gas fired by Israeli forces against them.
