Israeli guards assault Palestinian prisoners after stabbing

March 25, 2019 2:02 P.M. (Updated: March 26, 2019 2:41 P.M.)
BETHLEHEM (Ma'an) -- Hundreds of Palestinian prisoners were assaulted and injured by Israeli prison guards, Sunday night, in the Negev prison in southern Israel, after Hamas-affiliated prisoners stabbed two Israeli prison guards.

Sources told Ma'an that hundreds of prisoners were assaulted and injured. Meanwhile, Israeli media reported that only nine prisoners were injured.

Those injured were transferred to the Soroka Medical Center for treatment.

Israeli news outlets reported Hamas-affiliated prisoners stabbed two Israeli guards, critically injuring one in the neck.

Sources added that Israeli Prison Services (IPS) raided sections 5, 7 and 3 of the prison and assaulted prisoners.

Prisoners told Ma'an that Israeli guards assaulted prisoners while they were being transferred from section 4 to sections 3 and 7, provoking prisoners who then attacked and stabbed two Israeli guards.

Head of the Prisoners and Former Prisoners’ Affairs Committee, Qadri Abu Baker, told the Palestinian Authority (PA)-owned Wafa News and Information Agency that two Palestinian prisoners, identified as Islam Yusri Wishahi and Udayy Adel Salem, were critically injured.

The Palestinian Prisoner’s Society (PPS) warned of the gravity of the incident, holding the Israeli Prison Services entirely responsible for assaults against prisoners.

There are some 1,300 Palestinian prisoners in different sections of the Negev prison.
