Israeli forces suppress Land Day march in Kafr Qaddum

March 29, 2019 4:39 P.M. (Updated: March 30, 2019 9:22 A.M.)
QALQILIYA (Ma'an) -- Israeli forces suppressed the weekly Kafr Qaddum march in the northern occupied West Bank district of Qalqiliya, on Friday, commemorating the 43rd anniversary of Land Day and in solidarity with Palestinian prisoners in Israeli prisons.

Coordinator of the local popular committee in the village, Murad Ishteiwi, said that Israeli forces attacked protesters using fired rubber-coated bullets and tear-gas bombs.

Palestinian youths responded by throwing rocks and empty bottles.

No injuries nor detentions were reported.

Ishteiwi added that hundreds of locals took part in the march that was called for by the Fatah movement in commemoration of Land Day and in solidarity with Palestinian prisoners in Israeli prisons.

Residents of Kafr Qaddum stage regular protests against land confiscations as well as the closure of the village's southern road by Israeli forces. The road is the main route to the nearby city of Nablus, the nearest economic center.

The Israeli Prison Services (IPS) has recently imposed strict restrictions on dozens of Palestinian Hamas-affiliated prisoners, accusing them of taking part in the recent developments inside Israeli prisons.

Ninety Palestinian prisoners held at section 3 of the Negev prison, in southern Israel, were handcuffed to their beds overnight last Monday, following raids in different sections of the prison that left hundreds of Palestinian prisoners injured after Hamas-affiliated prisoners stabbed two Israeli prison guards.
