FM calls on Arab countries to provide financial safety net for Palestine

April 21, 2019 12:48 P.M. (Updated: April 21, 2019 1:34 P.M.)
RAMALLAH (Ma'an) -- Palestinian Minister of Foreign and Expatriates Affairs, Riyad Al-Malki, called upon Arab countries to provide the Palestinian government with a financial safety net to help it cope with the financial crisis resulting from Israel’s withholding of the Palestinian tax revenues, on Saturday.

Al-Malki said that Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas will deliver an important speech on Sunday during the Arab League Council at the level of foreign ministers, during which he will address the dangers facing the Palestinian issue in the coming stage, and the need to emphasize the basic Arab constants regarding the Palestinian issue.

He mentioned that 19 Arab foreign ministers and one state minister will be attending Sunday’s meeting, which reflects the commitment of the brotherly Arab countries to the Palestinian cause.

In mid-February, Israel's security cabinet approved the deduction of $138 million from the tax revenues it collects on behalf of the PA under the Oslo agreement.

The deduction is deemed to be relative to the said amount that the PA allocates for stipends paid to Palestinian prisoners in Israeli custody, as well as the families of the prisoners.

It is noteworthy that Israel collects funds from imports into the West Bank and Gaza, in addition to other taxes, and forwards a large sum of it to the PA, after deduction of payments for water and electricity.
