Saudi Arabia executes 37 nationals for 'terrorism-related crimes'

April 24, 2019 4:10 P.M. (Updated: April 30, 2019 1:31 P.M.)
BETHLEHEM (Ma'an) -- Saudi Arabia's Ministry of Interior said that the kingdom executed 37 Saudi nationals, on Tuesday, in connection with alleged “terrorism crimes.”
Most of the executed Saudi nationals were convicted in the Specialized Criminal Court (SCC) in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia’s secretive and widely condemned anti-terrorism tribunal.

According to the official Saudi Press Agency (SPA), "The death penalty was implemented on a number of culprits for adopting extremist terrorist ideologies and forming terrorist cells to corrupt and disrupt security as well as spread chaos and provoke sectarian strife."

Two of the executed men's bodies were publicly hung from a pole overlooking a main square for over three hours, which has sparked controversy for its gruesome display.

Reuters news outlet reported that in 2018, Saudi Arabia carried out the death sentences of 149 individuals, according to Amnesty International, which said only Iran was known to have executed more people.

It is noteworthy that people convicted of terrorism, homicide, rape, armed robbery, and drug trafficking face the death penalty, which the Saudi Arabian government says is “a deterrent for further crime.”
