Abbas congratulates Naruhito on his inauguration as Emperor of Japan

RAMALLAH (Ma'an) -- Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas congratulated Naruhito on the occasion of his inauguration as Emperor of Japan, on Thursday.

Abbas expressed to the new emperor “his pride in the friendly relations and cooperation between the two peoples and countries, as well as Japan's stand in support of the rights of the our people and in building their economy and institutions and for their struggle to establish the independent state with East Jerusalem as its capital as the city of tolerance, coexistence and peace for the followers of all religions.”

Naruhito, 59, ascended to the thrown as Emperor of Japan on May 1st after his father, Akihito, 85, abdicated his thrown on April 30th after a total reign of 31 years.

Akihito is the first Japanese emperor to stand down in more than 200 years.

During Naruhito’s speech, he paid tribute to Akihito while pledging to show the same devotion to his people.

He said, "I swear that I will reflect deeply on the course followed by the Emperor Emeritus and fulfil my responsibility as the symbol of the state and of the unity of the people of Japan."
