Abbas condemns 'criminal attacks' against four UAE ships

May 14, 2019 11:13 A.M. (Updated: May 14, 2019 1:01 P.M.)
RAMALLAH (Ma'an) -- Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas condemned in the strongest possible terms the criminal attacks against four commercial ships off the United Arab Emirates’ eastern coast, on Tuesday.

Abbas condemned the “cowardly” attacks and declared that the State of Palestine stands shoulder to shoulder with the UAE against any foreign aggression.

The UAE said four commercial ships were subjected to "sabotage operations," while sailing near the country's territorial waters in the Gulf of Oman, east of the port of Fujairah.

UAE’s Foreign Ministry said in a statement, "Four commercial, civilian trading vessels of various nationalities this morning suffered acts of sabotage.”

The ministry added, “Subjecting commercial vessels to sabotage operations and threatening the lives of their crew is considered a dangerous development."

The ministry also confirmed that it was investigating the incident "in cooperation with local and international bodies."

The “sabotage operation” did not lead to any casualties onboard or an oil spill of harmful chemicals or fuel, however, it damaged the structures of the two vessels.
