Israeli settlers attack Palestinian homes in center of Hebron

Feb. 13, 2019 12:46 P.M. (Updated: Feb. 14, 2019 11:12 A.M.)
HEBRON (Ma'an) -- Israeli settlers attacked several Palestinian homes, on Tuesday evening, on the al-Shuhada street in the Old City of Hebron, in the southern occupied West Bank.

According to local sources, a large group of Israeli settlers gathered in the Tel Rumeida neighborhood and on al-Shuhada street and attacked Palestinian homes.

Sources added that Israeli settlers organized a mass demonstration in the center of Hebron City, in areas under Israeli military control, chanting anti-Arab threats and slogans.

Heavily armed Israeli forces and police were deployed across the area to provide to the settlers participating in the demonstration.

Hebron resident, Mufid al-Sharabati, said that a group of Israeli settlers climbed on the roof and broke into his home.

However, al-Sharabati along with his family were able to protect themselves from the attack as Israeli Civil Administration and soldiers intervened and escorted the settlers out of the neighborhood.

The area of Tel Rumeida has long been a flashpoint for tensions between Palestinians and Israeli settlers and military, as it is located near illegal Israeli settlements whose residents are notoriously aggressive toward Palestinians.

Tel Rumeida is located within the area of the city designated as H2, an area taking over the bulk of Hebron's Old City that is under full Israeli military control, and the site of five illegal Israeli settlements which continually expand into surrounding Palestinian neighborhoods.

The Israeli-controlled H2 area is home to 30,000 Palestinians and around 800 Israeli settlers who live under the protection of Israeli forces.

Some 800 notoriously aggressive Israeli settlers now live under the protection of the Israeli military in the Old City of Hebron, surrounded by more than 30,000 Palestinians.

Palestinian residents of the Old City face a large Israeli military presence on a daily basis, with at least 20 checkpoints set up at the entrances of many streets, as well as the entrance of the Ibrahimi Mosque itself.

Meanwhile, Israeli settlers move freely on the street, drive cars, and carry machine guns.
